Wow! China Telecom and Qualcomm Sign CDMA Deal
Posted on: Friday, 30 May 2008, 06:00 CDT

China Telecom has announced a strategic tie-up with Qualcomm to use its CDMA technology. It will pay royalty fees to Qualcomm to use its technology in the mobile network it is acquiring from China Unicom.

As part of the recently announced nationwide restructuring of the telecoms industry in China, the company will buy China Unicom's CDMA network assets, subscriber base, and business operations for an estimated $12.9bn-$14.9bn. It has not confirmed whether an existing CDMA deal between China Unicom and Korean SK Telecom will continue.

Post-restructuring, Qualcomm will get about 4% in licensing fees from patents it licenses in CDMA2000 and WCDMA. It will also get royalties from China Netcom for all 3G WCDMA phones it sells.
