The root cause is our addiction to oil and that is what we should be attacking.

I think instead of looking to society or the government to plan your move away from oil, since you view use of oil as a problem ...

why not stop using oil? Change your lifestyle and stop buying gasoline, driving cars, traveling in airplanes. Move close to your work so you can walk or ride a bike there. Don't travel unless you can find a way to do it without burning a petroleum product. Make or buy an electric car or hydrogen powered car or ... whatever you can figure out.

Sure this will be difficult. But its a mistake to think it will be easier for society as a whole to do it.

BTW I dont' think use of fossil fuels per se is a problem. We will probably have to get off oil someday - longer away than most think. We may use a lot more natural gas or methane hydrates or liquified coal or something else. When shortages develop, the economic incentive will be there to find solutions - however good or bad they may turn out to be.
