He is what he is and he comes from the South Side of Chicago. Who else is going to work the South Side? These guys aren't milquetoasts - they are the black equivalent of Martin Luther (who was quite the nut himself). Being charismatic and spiritual unfortunately often goes hand in hand with being effective and nutty. Sad thing about religion, but there you are. You've got to take the good with the bad. Lots of nuts in the religious cracker jack box- on the right and on the left.
