I've heard arguments (from a guy called Duane Chapman) that Brazilian ethanol is not too economic either though way ahead of US corn based ethanol. It may be part of an interim solution. I'd guess though that in 50 years time it won't be a significant land transportation fuel. Likely, electricity from either batteries or fuel cells powered by renewables, nuclear, fusion maybe, and low carbon (coal gasification + cogeneration) or carbon neutral (latter plus carbon sequestration with burial or algae or something) coal will dominate. Ethanol might be good for planes if the weight of fuel cells etc. is too much.
