I spoke up when it happened to Lott- I thought the reaction was over done, and I think the reaction now is overdone. If someone is a high public official or a self-proclaimed spiritual leader of others, you really think it's OK if they lapse into racist hyperbole now and then? Just a little oopsie? I don't want to vote for or even listen to anyone who is capable of generating racist or other prejudicial nonsense - race bashing, ethnic bashing, faith bashing, none of it. They don't need slack. They need people in their face early and often who teach them why respecting your fellow man is better than having a good yuck or a good rant by crapping on him.
