A long time ago, McCain sowed his own wild oats. I couldn't care less. I don't think less of any of the three for acts in their early years. (I think Bush was the least responsible personally, since it took Laura telling him to get it together or she was out of there with the girls).
I would hate to be judged by my 20s. I did plenty of irresponsible things when I broke away from my strict Catholic, small town upbringing. Then I grew up. That someone didn't try marijuana frankly doesn't say much to me about character in a profound way at all. We all, and I do mean ALL, have caused pain or damage to others and made poor decisions. We all have those burdens on our hearts. That they are burdens is what speaks to character. I always loved that scene in Gone WIth the Wind when Belle Watley, the town prostitute, offers her money to the war effort and Scarlet turns up her nose in disdain, while Melanie, seeing the basic goodness in the act, gratefully took the money. That's character, not pseudo moral jugment on appearances or the past.
I was just pointing out that you seemed to be holding Obama to a different standard than the Repulicans. What Bob calls the Home Team Pass isn't a phenomenon on this board; it's a natural human to protect the people you favor.
As for checking sources, really, MM, it takes very little time at all. I just type the quote into Google and immediately get the full text, much of the time with commentary. I often spend more minutes researching something than I do posting. In fact, I often don't post after doing so, having read the argument and counterargument and decided, ok. No need to bring that up. |
