As I pointed out at the time, the proposed high-speed rail from LA to Vegas was estimated at $3B including land acquisition.

Three billion is way to cheap.....LA is notorious for underestimating the cost of rail projects so that people will approve them. For an example, Mpls St Paul is building an 11 mile, light rail line betwee St Paul and MPLS for 1 billion. Eleven miles in LA wouldn't even get you out of the city, let alone the suburbs, and land in LA is far more expensive than it is in Mpls. I bet a new heavy rail line from LA to the end of its suburbs alone would cost close to $10 billion. After that, its not so bad because there is mostly desert between LA and Las Vegas unlike between Houston and Dallas.

Having said that, $100 billion for the Dallas/Houston project is likely too much esp. if there is existing track.
