Oh gosh, I so don't want my kids to marry early!! Marriage is hard enough without having to grow up WITH someone!
Of course, since mine are now 25 and 27- I guess I don't have to worry about that. (On the other hand, I'm not sure they are really grown up yet.)
I had a brief just out of college marriage because that's what you did back then. I suppose had we gutted it out, we might have managed, but I doubt it. We were all wrong for each other. At 28, I met Dan. We've been married 30 years now and I adore him. He is the finest husband, father, person ever. But as a psychologist once told me, "By 28 that's what you were looking for." Sort of unromantic, but probably true.
I think people need a year or two of living on their own, paying their own bills, being responsible for themselves, and figuring out who they are independent of others. It may not be as true now, but my generation of women really needed that. A lot of us were raised to be dependent. |
