Don't let Intel fool you. I'm sure they have designs up their sleeve that would make DEC's chips look like child's play. But for Intel to manufacture a chip design it must sell in the multi-million units or nothing at all. Why should Intel tell everyone what they are capable of if there is no market for it yet?

Besides, judging from DEC's earnings vs. Intel's earnings, it is obvious which business model works best.

As for IBM: true they spend tons on R&D, but if you ask me alot of it must be misguided. It's not the amount of dollars you spend on R&D that matters.

There's been alot of talk about the P7 project and it excites me too.

BTW, do you think that DEC will someday discontinue their Alpha in exchange for an intel-based design? I don't follow DEC closely enough to know if it would be cost effective.
