For example, some jerk used the C word in reference to McCain's wife, and instead of decking the guy like he could justifiably have done, he just deflected the insult.

McCain was alleged to have used that word himself in relation to his own wife in public. I have no idea if it is true, but this is another case where the quote should be accurate, if your aim is to make a point about McCain.
