Near the record level again for gross SOI. Recrd low for companies reporting at 3144 near 60 fewer than the Gorss SOI was reached a few months ago. Fewer companies, higher SOI....New record.gross SOI.

NASDAQ OMX Announces Mid-month Open Short Interest Positions in NASDAQ OMX Stocks as of Settlement Date May 15, 2008

NEW YORK, May 27, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- At the end of the settlement date of May 15, 2008, short interest in 2,641 NASDAQ Global Market(sm) securities totaled 9,500,539,527 shares compared with 9,427,457,178 shares in 2,653 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of April 30, 2008. The mid-May short interest represents 4.53 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 4.86 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 503 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 170,590,779 shares at the end of the settlement date of May 15, 2008, compared with 163,111,806 shares in 507 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 3.82 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 4.38.

In summary, short interest in all 3,144 NASDAQ OMX securities totaled 9,671,130,306 shares at the end of the May 15, 2008 settlement date, compared with 3,160 issues and 9,590,568,984 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.52 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 4.86 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ OMX security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. A short sale is generally understood to mean the sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is consummated by the delivery of a security borrowed by or for the account of the seller.
