No, the Iraqi Shiites are Arab and the Iraqi Shiite religious leadership, led by Ayatollah Sistani, aren't the power mad type who run Iran.

You are giving small, fleeting differences... the fact remains that getting a long surviving liberal democracy in Iraq (or anything that we would recognize as a democracy) is highly unlikely. Too many moving parts, way to many divisions.

I suspect you are looking for an excuse to abandon the market mechanism.

To the extent that it exists, no I am not. I've long held the same view that oil isn't the problem, in fact it's a wonderful, very powerful commodity. It is so energy packed and wonderful that it should be used as rarely as possible and with the utmost efficiency.
