One was not exactly directed at him (Julius Rosenwald, who was called JR), but was directed at Sears Roebuck. It was the rumor which some of you may have heard that Roebuck was black. How many of you have heard that? Okay, it’s not true, unfortunately. But it was a rumor put out by enemies of his to try to decrease business at Sears, because southern white people who thought that Roebuck was black might not have wanted to shop there.
