Bob -

I know you like blaming the Democrats exclusively for the current high prices of oil, and the energy problems we face in general.

But do let me ask you this. Do you not think the Republicans bear some of the blame for caving into the Automakers lobby about CAFE standards? The US has very low mileage standards, relative to the rest of the world. And then there's the business about treating SUVs as trucks, thus exempting them from even the mild standards that are placed on cars.

As far as the Republican platform of 2000 goes, it does contain some verbiage about other forms of energy besides oil and gas. However, the question of balance is not answered by looking at whether or not one mentions those things, but by how resources are allocated in actual policy.

I would submit that on the conservation and alternative energy side of the equation, the Bush Administration's policy hasn't come close to being balanced. Tens of billions in tax credits for the oil companies vs. pittances for everything else, and short shrift given to CAFE standards.
