A decently large sub set of the US is celebrity obsessed.

Well not just the US it happens elsewhere as well, and it also isn't really something new. It might be bigger than it was in the past, but that's at least partially because in modern times, with modern communications technology, everyone gets to see the celebrities, and also facts and rumors about them can spread faster and further.

I would expect the media to serve this market, and I don't really have a problem with them doing so, as long as they also serve up serious news. The only problem is when they fail to do a good job at that task.
