The cross faults might have had something to do with it, as these cross faults can cause pressure differentials of up to 1000 psi.

If they abandoned significantly before target depth, it indicates that they could have run into trouble that does not impugn the quality of the target.

Probably drilling with DS fluids, or improved mud handling and sand removal might have improved their chances. Or drilling with reverse circulation. Not many people are exposed to using the new polymers or the use of RCCD technologies. It may be that ordinary sealing, gelling, cementing and mud technologies and care might have got them through. We will never know.
