Let the Nation of Islam patrol Miami? Sure, what could go wrong?

michellemalkin.com • June 3, 2008

Hey, it’s a city full of Jewish retirees. Give Farrakhan the police powers and let him watch out for them:

The City of Miami says it plans to give $150,000 to a civilian patrol group known as the Peacemakers, to be run by the Progressive Land Development International, an organization that shares a mailing address with the Nation of Islam in Miami…

…Details of the program are still vague and an official contract has yet to be signed. But Ed O’Dell, spokesman for the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency, said the suit-and-tie wearing Muslim group will be working independent from police as role models* and crime watchers.

Okay, the Peacemakers are not exactly the same as the Nation of Islam. They just share a taste in bow ties, a mailing address, and it’s run by Elijah Muhammad’s son:

…the group is headed by Rasul Muhammad, a prominent Nation of Islam member and the son of former leader Elijah Muhammad, and its corporate offices are at the group’s Miami mosque.

Muhammad told the Miami Herald that the Peacemakers are not a racist organization.

“We are not anti-Jewish people. We are not anti-Catholic people. We are not anti-white people. The whole Peacemakers project is being based on being anti-crime, anti-immorality…. Are they saying that they don’t want peace?” he told the Herald.

I love it. Hey, if you don’t agree with us, you must hate peace. People aren’t going to fall for that stupid rhetorical trick–well, normal people. Liberals might.

Got a problem? Just call 911, and we’ll send Officers John Muhammad and Lee Malvo around to your house to deal with it.

I’ve said before that I’m not for a faith-based nuclear proliferation policy. I can’t really get all fired up for faith-based policing either. And something tells me I’m not the only one, and there is about to be a huge spike in CCW permit applications from Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.

*I see a huge first amendment issue here. These guys are given a privileged position of state authority, as well as money. If this isn’t an establishment of Islam, what is?
