Solar thermal is definitely a potentiall viable technology, which is focused more on mirrors than actual photon to electron conversion.. But it requires extensive piping for the water/steam, as well as turbines.. So there's a greater "footprint" and maintenance factor.

There's certainly room for both technologies.
