LIAR. Carter never did that. Carter was in an almost no-win position inheriting the post-war debt and mess in the Middle East, but he would have looked like the biggest hero in the world if his daring Delta Force rescue mission had succeeded. There are some who suspect the mission was sabotaged by far rightwing Oliver North types. There is also proof that Reagan's people (Richard Armitage in Paris) met with Iranian leaders before the election and offered them weapons in exchange for holding onto the US hostages until after the election. That in my opinion is treason.
