Thoughts on ad hominem.

The literal translation is 'toward the man'. An argumetum ad hominem is an argument based on personal slander (or praise) which obscures the real points at issue. One of the meanings is that it attacks the character as flawed in an attempt to prove the argument wrong. Seems to me that if the ad hominem is relevant and related to the point, it is no longer a true ad hominem as we define it today. It isn't obfuscatory; it's actually illuminative.

There are some other interesting argumenti we see around here.

Argumentum ad individium- appeals to men's prejudices

Argumentum ad populum- appeals to the crowd

Argumentum baculinum- depends on physical force to sustain it, well, ok, we don't see that one.

This one I am not sure I understand
Argumentum ex silentio- out of silence; based on the absence of firm evidence.
