It's a cache structure that's more flexible and efficient for a native quad-core when the cores share data which is why Barcelona also has it. However you take a hit on single-thread as does Barcelona, you really can't be good at everything with caches, choices and priorities have to be made. Penryn's cache is a work of art that won't be rivalled for some time.
