Karen -

While catching up on the tread today, I observed your exchange with spiral3 about ethics.

I loved this paragraph from you:

"As for 'deciding on the worlds 10 biggest problems,' that's not quite what they did. They came up with a list of the most cost effective actions that could be taken to mitigate the problems. They had methodology, objective methodology. They used cost/benefit analysis as at least part of their analytical methodology and a consensus building methodology for operating jointly, to come up with the list."

When I read that line from him, I had the same reaction, and considered posting a response. I was pleased to see that you caught that.

There are times when I despair over the fact that such a small percentage of our population is able to make important distinctions like that, or really to fully grasp any issue that isn't presented as a black/white dichotomy. To me, that's the fatal flaw in democracy. Potentially fatal, anyway. The fact that there are always people willing to take advantage of the majority's inability or unwillingness to employ logic effectively leads us to the kinds of campaigns we've seen over the past decade or so.

I really hope things will be different this year, but I am not going to forego respiration. ;-)
