Only at the peak. When the sun is lower in the sky, any closer spacing would start shading parts of the array.

The gaps seem to be between 1.5x and 2x of the width of the reflectors. Maybe the distance maximizes the ROI, and gets the maximum out of each reflector at the lowest angle of the sun.

But, IMO, the land use should enter into the equation as well. Getting max per acre means that less of the earth surface is covered with these things.
