Before the effort to try to research the numbers can really begin, you have to nail down what you are counting. Contractors hired by the US government in Iraq? All types of foreign contractors hired by anyone for any purpose? Do you count people supporting the effort from Kuwait?

I don't have a very solid idea about the numbers, but the majority of the contractors are not fighters. Blackwater gets a lot more attention, but most contractors are building things, maintaining things, or moving in supplies, or feeding soldiers, or doing other non combat tasks.
