Gun control, strong military, abortions to name a few........this is a conservative country. Its taken me a while to accept that premise.

Not so much. The country is not particularly conservative on gun control; it's just that among the people who are pro-gun, it tends to be a much more important issue than among those who are anti-gun.

This is what Webb said in the article you posted to me:

"The politics of the Karl Rove era were designed to distract and divide the very people who would ordinarily be rebelling against the deterioration of their way of life. Working Americans have been repeatedly seduced at the polls by emotional issues such as the predictable mantra of "God, guns, gays, abortion and the flag" while their way of life shifted ineluctably beneath their feet. But this election cycle showed an electorate that intends to hold government leaders accountable for allowing every American a fair opportunity to succeed."

He says it right there......a good part of the electorate has been seduced by the mantra of guns, gays, abortion and the flag.....sounds pretty conservative to me.
