The 'teacher' is of course wrong as shown by the recent example of Brisbane vs Windsor, a 25% increase in L2 latency (12 to 15) that had a severe percentage hit on many applications. We are talking about a 33% increase in L1 for Nehalem. Now the situation is not totally analagous as the front end before the cache has been reworked and L2 latency has gone down about 27% as well but there could be cache-bound situations where it could bite.
