Unfortunately, instead of hiking the price ourselves by means of a gasoline tax that could be instantly refunded to the American people in the form of lower payroll taxes, we let the Saudis, Venezuelans, Russians and Iranians do the taxing for us --

Like most people, Krauthammer seems to be under the false assumption that the Saudis et al are responsible for the rising price of oil. His list of evildoers are simply the beneficiaries of prices that are being set as we speak, limit up, by traders at ICE and the Nymex.

The reality is that we (our commodity exchanges and players thereon) are taxing ourselves and benefitting some of our 'enemies' in the process.

Surreal and pathetic.

Also, it's ironic that Krauthammer declares $4 to be the price point driving down consumption (which is indeed falling) on the very day that the price of oil sets a new high.

Don't regulate. Don't mandate

Interesting. He doesn't want to mandate fuel efficiencies but does favor "mandating" higher gas taxes. Time for this guy to retire, I think.....his ability to think logically is going, I fear.
