tj, recently I noticed most property agencies are fixing the price of real estate. I believe they have learned the lesson of 97 aftermath, and now they seem to be able to keep the supply at artificially low and tight. Even their websites do not show any downward movement in the house index from the chart, unlike before. The rental market is still hot in office building area down in central and the west side of it. But a downturn in US financial industry could spread across the Pacific into the rock solid downtown district when massive layoffs are announced worldwide. So far, it is pretty hard to knock the price down onto floor. Very rock solid :0) Maybe 3-5 years later, a different story could develop. But looks like cement price might not rise along with oil, if the housing bubble get burst globally in stagflation and hyperinflation period. Hard to get a grip as you say 'inflate everything away'. Then, the DOW may not collapse just yet. Only the papers collapse.
