The topic of slavery is an interesting one. One principle that should be considered is the cultural context in which it occurs. In the case of slavery by the europeans, we must remember that they had no background of slavery in that culture, hence, they made a very bad mess of it. In certain cultures, slavery is not that much different than social classes. The slaves, for instance, in North Africa, had certain rights and priviledges, such as changing households. The family unit was respected, also. Husbands, wives, and children were not separated. One interesting source was an old book called:
"Crisis in Black and White." I believe the author was Silverman (1960's).
