What Americans do not realize is that they are rapidly becoming much poorer by world standards.

I have just discovered that a fairly modest hotel room in Rome for the month of October can easily cost $250-$300 a night. Not many years ago the same room would have been $120, and some years before that, $50. Many millions of U. S. citizens have just been priced out of travel to Italy. You can now get a better hotel room in San Francisco for half the price as in Rome.

For some reason that I don't understand, hotel rates in Paris remain a good deal cheaper than in Rome.

The UK has also got some painful adjustments to make, as the North Sea oil runs out. The pound ought to be dropping right alongside the dollar.
