For what it is worth.

I am new to this thread, but I would like to put in my 2 cents worth. I am probably
repeating what others have already said as I haven't read all of the messages on
the thread.

I think George Gilder is an very insightful individual and is probably correct on his
assertion that the new paradigm is toward providing bandwidth. However, I differ
with Mr. Gilder on several points:

1) I do not think that in the foreseeable future that bandwidth will become free and
unlimited. In the next 10 years, we as a global society, will build the broadband
infrastructure needed to make the information superhighway a reality. But there
will still be a charge for how much bandwidth you use. File compression such
as MPEG will still be desirable. After all, if we make the analogy to Microcosm,
CPU power right now is neither free nor unlimited.

2) Microsoft will still be a player. Bill Gates and Microsoft are not a static entity.
Gates knows what is going on. He realizes (maybe because of George Gilder)
that the broadband data capability is the next step. Why do you think he formed
Teledesic. And if Java actually did replace Windows, you can bet that
Microsoft would be a player. I sure as heck wouldn't go out and short MSFT.

3) The Net PC will not totally replace the current desktop PC. I can see that the
Net PC will have application to bring computing to the masses that cannot
afford or understand a desktop PC. But I think the large majority of those that
already have PC's will continue to use and upgrade them. I for one do not
want to download all of my applications from a central net, and I certainly do
not want my data stored on some central computer no matter how much
bandwidth we have.
