Gallup: Obama takes lead over McCain, 48%-42%
USA TODAY

Gallup reports that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has taken a national lead over presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. Obama has 48% to McCain's 42%.

The 6-point lead is outside the +/-2 point margin of error in the tracking poll of 2,389 registered voters. They were interviewed over the last three nights.

Gallup says Obama is enjoying "a modest bump" since Hillary Clinton's exit from the race. She did not get out until Saturday but her plan to end her campaign became public on Wednesday. "Obama has consistently held a lead of five to seven percentage points each night since it was reported that Hillary Clinton intended to suspend her campaign," the company says.

The Gallup results closely resemble the Rasmussen Reports national tracking poll, which shows the race at Obama 50%, McCain 44% among likely voters.
