I think the US's stature in the Muslim world was likely lower in 2006.

Possible - but with recent developments in Lebanon and even the Israel-Syria negotiations suggest that the US is not as respected on the world stage as they once were

As for bin Laden, his stature was probably higher right after 9/11

Again I disagree - the US had so much good will in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, many moderates in the Muslim world were on our side - not so anymore
