Uranium Resources applies for exploratory uranium drilling permit near Grants, N.M.

ca.us.biz.yahoo.com

SANTA FE (AP) -- A mining firm seeks a permit for exploratory drilling for uranium on private land about 12 miles northeast of Grants.

Uranium Resources Inc. applied for a permit with the state Mining and Minerals Division.

Division Director Bill Brancard says his agency won't issue a permit until all regulatory requirements are met.

He says the division works with other state agencies to ensure all state requirements are followed.

Brancard says his division has issued seven permits in the past two years and has two pending, including Uranium Resources.

The company proposes 10 holes, each six inches in diameter and 1,100 feet deep. The application says fewer than three acres would be disturbed.

Comments are due by July 15.
