We could have.

Had the Dems not failed to pass drilling in ANWR in the mid-90s we would not be facing this problem today. It is probably too late to avail ourselves of that oil in the near term.

The solution to this problem is twofold -- more drilling immediately to address the near-term demand, and a Manhattan Project to move to all electric vehicles with 5-7 years. IF you move 20-25% of vehicles to electric, the price of oil will not be a problem going forward. They'll be begging us to take it.

The real question is how to get American automakers to participate. They're idiots and have shown it time and again. Meanwhile, the foreign OEMs (Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, and Toyota) will OWN the auto market if American OEMs don't get on top of this. Which will serve only to make our trade deficit in autos grow in lieu of oil.

The one thing that is guaranteed to put Obama in office is if he first proposes a five-to-ten year plan to make us energy independent before McCain. And I fear that could happen -- the McCain campaign is just too slow to react to such concepts. Whoever calls for it first, wins.
