"Nobody is talking about "world demand"."

Sure we are. The crude in question has little use in the US. So, what are they supposed to do with it?

"We're talking about producing enough to get us through a short-term crisis IN THE UNITED STATES."

What part of "sour crude" and "most US refineries can't use it" don't you understand? Do you have the slightest clue as to the oil industry? I grew up in the middle of the largest petrochemical complex in the world. Beaumont was the birthplace of the modern oil industry. That happened on January 10th, 1901. Sure, Drake drilled wells earlier, but oil was a curiosity until Spindletop.

"No, that is because the unions have destroyed the US auto industry and now prevent it from being competitive."

Right wing bullshit. The rank and file don't decide on the products to produce. That is the accountants in management. Their myopia is what led to their problems. Face it, your guys can't look beyond the current quarterly report. So they have flown the entire industry into the ground. Now, granted, the unions didn't help the situation. But if management didn't have their head so far up their asses that you can't see their toes, it would have just been another factor in doing business.
