If the burglar decided to make a complaint, Mr Watson could not be prosecuted under the Dangerous Dogs Act because the incident took place on his private property.

I like that part of the story.....probably a mixed bag of laws if it happened in this country since criminals have rights, ya know.....My daughter was playing with her dog Tiny(only 110 lbs) when a hispanic fellow walked up into the yard without seeing the two. Tiny got him by the pants and sat down until the all clear was issued...the guy didn't move an inch while in the grasp of that good dog.
