When I built this house 4 years ago I used 2x12's for the exterior walls, and filled them with R30 insulation. Everyone told me I was stupid for spending so much extra money, almost $3,000 more, on something that wouldn't matter when I sold the home. Even my parents and inlaws thought I was nuts, especially when I further insulated the attic to R70+

The house is soundproofed, which IMHO is a major benefit. We spent less than $500 on heat last winter, and house was warm. Parents spent $2000+ to heat same sized house, and their house was always cold. Inlaws also spent over $1500 last winter on heating a much smaller house.

Not looking so stupid these days to people (at least not for that!). The savings have already more than paid for up front cost.

One other little benefit. While everyone else needs 18,000+ BTU central A/C units to cool their homes we us a strategically placed 5,000 BTU window unit to cool the entire house. That's a couple hundred more dollars saved every summer.

Funniest part is, our neighbors think we pay a fortune in energy bills because our house is on the big size for the neighborhood. In actuality our bills are about half the normal for the drafty old homes here.
