El Mat,

sciencedaily.com

This is about as ugly as a drilling screw-up can get. A subsurface blowout that broached the surface near the rig, then proceeded to blow out over 2 years. Why? Not sure, but there is a discussion about the well design being economised.

Some economy. It has covered 7 square kilometers with a foul smelling mud, in places 10 - 15 ft thick, completely displacing the population. Think about that happening near you.

A channel has been dug some kilometers to the sea to try to contain and direct the flow (no environmental impact there!). And with the tremendous volumes that have flowed, a caldera will eventually form. A big crater that will fill with salt water, be as black as pitch, and have a nice, sulphurous foul odor emanating from it.

I've seen these in the former Soviet Union, still bubbling away all these years later. What a mess.
