No way. Nissan is coming out with a complete line of electric cars in 2010, 60 models by 2012.

The simple truth is that as long as you are paying $30/hour plus totally unreasonable benefits for essentially unskilled labor, you cannot compete with a Hyundai or Nissan. The unions have destroyed the American car industry.

Just as an example of how absurd it is, there was a need to install a satellite antenna on the back of certain GM vehicles a few years ago. It needed to be installed in the center of the roof.

The unions refused to install it in the center and insisted on installing on one side of the roof. Why? Because it meant the installer had to reach more than 18" to do it. Stupid. When all was said and done, when they finally came to terms, GM had to pay the employees MORE to get them to reach more than 18".

Now, you may not have a problem with that. But you can't compete in a global marketplace with this kind of insanity. You can't have the unions curtailing designs for some shit like that, and you can't have GM paying more for a minor change in job duties.

The unions are clearly the downfall of the American auto industry, and anyone who claims otherwise simply doesn't understand the issues.

Have the American OEMs made mistakes? Of course. But the unions are what has killed them.
