From Tucson I was inferring that the terminology may be a SW thing, which would include Texas. But that's just a guess.

It seems to me, too, that one could call a place that was designed or well suited for livestock, a place that would be advertised by realtors as a ranch, a "ranch" even if there weren't any critters currently in residence.
