It, in fact, has been done. During the 1990s, a research vessel dumped iron sulfate in its wake.

I don't know if they answered the question of where the carbon goes, though. I suspect that, if the enrichment were to be ongoing, then an ecosystem to use that carbon would spring up. By seeding certain species, harvestable fish populations could be established.
