WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The federal budget deficit widened to $165.9 billion in May as the government paid out some $48 billion in tax rebates to individuals, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday. Receipts fell to $124.3 billion in May, down 24% compared with the previous May. Outlays rose 25% year-on-year to $290.2 billion. The May budget deficit was close to the $165 billion forecast by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
