U.S. stocks clipped by earnings, trade tensions

NEW YORK, Oct 16 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks slipped in afternoon trading, hit by
jitters over trade tensions with Japan and a
batch of disappointing earnings news out of some blue chip stocks.

The Dow was off 100 points, or 1.2 percent, at 7959.

Traders cited news the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission voted to order
Japanese ships be denied entry at U.S. ports
because shippers did not pay an estimated $4 million in fines.

They also cited disappoiting earnings news from Merck and Co Inc (MRK) AND
Sears (S).

The Nasdaq composite dropped 23 points to 1700.
