Hey Sea Otter,

I am not indifferent to the environment, but I do think that the opposition to ANWR is exaggerated. My lawyer brother-in-law, an outdoorsman, agrees with the studies that show disruption to the caribou and the land would be minimal.

What you nailed is the fact that ANWR has become some kind of symbol for the pros and cons of oil exploration, far beyond its ability to alleviate the problem. It isn't going to solve anything, but it could be part of a comprehensive longterm transition plan, something no one seems willing to actually enact. We keep nitpicking at silly temporary fixes, or making expansive we MUST or the world will end statements... and we never get anywhere.

I don[t understand the part about being fungible and world markets... does that mean we don't get to keep our own oil? Forgive total ignorance please.
