Because Bill Clinton vetoed the first bill Congress passed to open ANWR to drilling, and because Democrats have led the way on opposing drilling there ever since, it has become a very convenient symbol. The way some people talk about it, one would think our entire energy problem was created by Bill Clinton and the Democrats blocking the opening of ANWR.

Meanwhile, the oil companies aren't exactly suffering. I can't imagine that they have a real problem with the current situation. They still have the multibillion dollar tax breaks in force, while they reap record profits.
