He told us to wear sweaters and turn down our thermostats in the winter (up in the summer). He turned off the WH Christmas lights. He slapped on a windfall tax on the oil industry and price controls on natural gas, both of which tended to hold down production. Oh yeah, he enunciated the Carter doctrine - that the free flow of oil from the Persian Gulf was a vital interest of the US that it would be willing to go to war for. en.wikipedia.org Of course, if he hadn't undercut the Shah, this might not have been necessary. He also created the Dept of Energy which wastes billions each year.
