It really makes me wonder how much the politicians actually want to get done and how much they just want to grandstand.

I recommend the Harwood/Seib book on this score. It's an odd book but takes as its focus Washington players who get things down in a hyperpartisan atmosphere. So a portion of the book lays out the structural and personal terrain of "hypartisanship." Best presentation of it I've read.

In addition, however, they present thumbnail sketches of folk who have been able to get things done. Some of them are new and informative; some are old and tired; and they simply get some stories wrong. Illustration: Billy Tauzin, the Louisiana legislator who hered George Bush's prescription drug bill through the house and then went to work at the chief lobbyist for the drug industry. They get him wrong.

But overall it's an interesting read. And if you have a Kindle, it costs less than $10.
