My son lives in a gated community with upscale homes, and there are deer, bobcats, ducks, geese, beavers, cranes, and coyotes. I've seen deer from his back window. They dropped fawns just below his house

It's amazing what can live in an "urban area" if efforts are made to keep some greenbelt. We are five miles from the huge Tysons Corner shopping center but our neighborhood with county-protected watershed lands running throughout supports a lot. We have resident deer and a couple of foxes I see all the time, and all the bird life you get with 100-foot oaks all around.

They key was an initial plan not to build on every square inch of ground and wipe out all the habitat.
