They key was an initial plan not to build on every square inch of ground and wipe out all the habitat.

Agreed. Land owners can also sell conservation easements that allows them to keep their land in such a way that it can never be subdivided or converted to other uses. It's voluntary, which is the way it should be with private land.

I know people who are working very hard with this organization.
